'Very promising': Reports of new coronavirus cases plummet in Sweden despite increase in testing
by Dominick Mastrangelo, Social Media Producer |   | July 29, 2020 10:43 AM

Health officials in Sweden reported on Tuesday that they are gaining better control of the coronavirus.

“That Sweden has come down to these levels is very promising,” Anders Tegnell, one of the nation's top epidemiologists, said during a news conference. "The curves are going down, and the curves for the seriously ill are beginning to approach zero." Sweden's falling infection rate has coincided with an increase in testing, bolstering Tegnell's positive outlook.

Sweden, which hit its peak in infectious and critical illnesses from the virus in late June, has seen the rate of new infections fall significantly since. State health officials reported just two new deaths on Tuesday, bringing the country's full tally to 5,702.

Tegnell also addressed mask mandates: “With numbers diminishing very quickly in Sweden, we see no point in wearing a face mask in Sweden, not even on public transport."

The country's handling of the coronavirus, which included no overarching lockdown or stay-at-home measures, has become a flashpoint for the international community during the pandemic. Tegnell has stressed that because COVID-19 may be present for years, lockdowns are not a sustainable, long-term option.

Some critics of lockdown measures in America have pointed to Sweden as an example of how the United States should have handled the pandemic.

“It is interesting to see that the Swedish stress on what we call ‘freedom under responsibility‘ is getting picked up by the libertarian right in the U.S.,” Lars Tragardh, a history professor at a premier Swedish University told Politico. "The big problem with all of that is that Sweden is all built, ultimately, on a very strong alliance between the state and the individual.”

Sweden has a higher case fatality rate than most other nations in the Nordic region, many of which have a fraction of the population of what the U.S. has. The case fatality rate is the total number of deaths divided by the total number of reported cases. It does not include unconfirmed cases found by serological surveys.

Swedish deaths from the virus per 100,000 people exceed the U.S., according to data gathered by Johns Hopkins University.

President Trump has cited Sweden's handling of the virus as evidence that he has done a good job in protecting Americans' health while keeping the U.S. economy afloat.

"Despite reports to the contrary, Sweden is paying heavily for its decision not to lockdown," Trump tweeted in late April. "As of today, 2462 people have died there, a much higher number than the neighboring countries of Norway (207), Finland (206) or Denmark (443). The United States made the correct decision!"
