A Two Phased Approach to Protect Ohio’s Health and Economy
Phase 1
We are currently hyper-focused on the C19 situation. I have been told by many doctors and nurses that they are shut down, getting laid off, or unable to properly treat patients who have other critical care needs. We cannot be so focused on one pandemic that we create 3 to 5 other health care pandemics. All health conditions are important, not just those with C19. I also have doctors telling me they have lost 85% of their practices and are either days or a week or so away from closing their doors permanently. This would cause a huge number of our health care providers to be lost in Ohio forever.
My suggestion is we allow the doctors and nurses in these fields to immediately open back up with proper precautions. These people are trained in infectious disease control and know how to manage and properly care for their patients, so we should trust them to do so. We should also be gravely concerned about the health and welfare of people who have heart problems, lung problems, colon issues, prostate or bladder surgeries, and other conditions that are not C19 related. There are many Ohioans that are in desperate need of care, and their situations, which were not critical 3-4 weeks ago, are now critical according to the doctors and nurses contacting me. These Ohioans deserve care as well. Lastly, allowing these medical offices and surgical centers to open, allows them to stay financially healthy so we don’t lose 40-70% of our offices and health care centers in Ohio permanently.
We cannot be so focused on C19 that we cause a severe health care crisis for thousands of Ohioans. These patients deserve the critical care they need.
Phase 2
Right now, we are all considered “spreaders or getters” of C19. We are red marked, if you will, and thus our entire economy is closed down. So how do we turn this trend and protect the most vulnerable, while also protecting our way of life and economy in Ohio?
What we need is to turn ourselves into “green marks.” There are three possible scenarios which would classify someone as immune, or “green”. 1. Those who have had a confirmed case of C19 and recovered. 2. Some may have had C19, didn’t know it, and are now immune. 3. Some may have natural immunity to C19. Anyone in any of these three groups is no longer a ‘spreader or getter’ and could be released for work. This could open up Ohio for thousands of citizens to get back to our way of life; the best way of life in the world.
So how is this accomplished? There are several finger prick blood tests coming out that would provide each of us a $20 means of turning ourselves green. While we have to be careful that the tests are indeed accurate, that can easily be done by voluntary testing on known C19 patients and discovering if they have immunities. This can then be used voluntarily on the wider public to see who has immunities. Many have speculated that C19 has been in the country and Ohio since November of last year. This could prove to us that there are far more people immune, allowing those people to go back to work in various industries. It would also give all of us confidence that a business or person is ‘green marked’ safe. I personally do not like the idea of waiting 6-12 months for a vaccine that may be only 30% effective and may cause untold other side effects. As it stands now, the annual flu vaccine is only 35-45% effective each year, (CDC) so finding natural immunities to bugs is always best.
This could give people confidence that they are immune. Businesses could also pay for and test their employees and could be deemed code green and free and clear to open again.
This should also be deregulated and controlled locally by a private/public partnership. Individual doctors and local communities can order and administer and certify the test without central control of the testing facilities. Let the free market compete, make the tests, make them widely available, and bring the costs down. And let’s do it right here in the USA or better yet, Ohio.
Let’s go from red to green.
