I received a response from the Ohio Department of Health on the question about whether the combined tests used by some hospital systems (tests that detect COVID/Influenza/RSV) were reporting positive results as COVID-positive even if the tests detect other viruses.
The Ohio Department of Health answer:
“on your question about the combined test that measures COVID, Influenza and RSV. Those tests are to collect one sample from a patient, but be able to test it simultaneously for 3 different infections. This does not mean it’s an all-or-none approach. The tests generate one result per virus type. The results for the 3 different infections are separate data points, and only the COVID positive results are reflected in our data.”
Also part of the ODH response was feedback on other viruses (influenza, etc) being down. Here’s what the Ohio Department of Health had to say about that:
“There is currently no evidence that other respiratory illnesses are increasing in Ohio. In fact, there are many fewer non-COVID respiratory illnesses than usual because of the social distancing, mask wearing, and working from home.”
This doesn’t pass the sniff test with me on first blush. So, is the simple answer that COVID is more contagious than other illnesses and that masks are keeping other illnesses at bay but not COVID? And why are masks working for other respiratory illnesses but not COVID?
My response back to ODH (I’ll advise when they respond):
“How is it that influenza (or other respiratory illnesses) is down because of mask wearing, distancing etc....but COVID cases are up?
Also, we are getting conflicting messages on the masking and distancing...we heard that Ohioans were masking at 80% to 90% and distancing but now hear that's not the case. What direct evidence supports the notion that masking and distancing are down?"
